What is the Difference Between a Freight Forwarder and a Customs Clearing Agent?
When you have to import or export goods to or from any country, you are going to need the specialized help of a Freight Forwarder and a Customs Clearing Agent. Many think that this is the same thing but it’s not. There is a distinct difference in what a Freight Forwarder and a Customs Clearing Agent does and unlike Daigon Intl, some companies specialize in only one or the other.
Freight Forwarder
A Freight Forwarder essentially secures the business of various exporters and importers and has the ability/facility to deliver a wide range of services, depending on your import/export requirements.
a Freight Forwarder arrange storage for cargo belonging to the clients at their warehouse. Some Forwarders will have their own warehouses and other storage facilities.
Arrange the distribution (forwarding) of cargo as per the client’s instructions. This could either be regular or various other forms of routing.
Negotiate freight rates with shipping or airline companies to cover the interests of a client.
Book cargo with the shipping line or airline company to cover the interests of the client.
Prepare bills of lading and associated shipping/negotiating documentation (F178, Certificate of Origin, etc)
Issue the approved House Bill of Lading as applicable.
May or may not do Customs Clearance. It’s up to every Forwarding Agent whether they also handle Customs Clearance. In the case of Daigon Intl., we handle Customs Clearance if requested to do so by the client.
In order to be able to do Customs Clearance, a Forwarding Agent has to be accredited to Customs, Port, etc.
Customs Clearing Agent
Essentially, a Clearing Agent takes care of the Customs Clearance aspect of the Import/Export business.
A Clearing Agent:
Is a company accredited with local customs authorities, border agencies, port, etc.
Arranges to pass the relevant documentation at Customs.
Arranges for Customs inspections as required.
Checks and processes Duty and VAT payments as applicable.
Applies for refunds, etc where applicable.
Can only issue own Bills of Lading if registered or acting as a Freight Forwarder.
Why you should choose us
Although there are companies like Daigon Intl. that do both freight forwarding and customs clearing, it’s not the case with all companies. Many specialize in either one or the other. But dealing with one company that will do both for you ensures a smoother import/export experience as no work gets doubled up on and you will always know exactly what is going on with your freight.
